PICO California Action Fund supports this legislation because no one should profit from fear, detention, or the separation of families — and California taxpayers should never be forced to pay for it.
BECOME A
When corporations profit from detention and family separation, the harm does not fall evenly. It lands first on the poor, the vulnerable, and the most marginalized among us.
A healthy democracy demands that our public dollars reflect our public values. When taxpayer money flows to companies that profit from caging people and tearing families apart, it creates a disconnect between what California says and what California funds.
In those moments, we are reminded that justice is not merely a legal principle, but a spiritual calling: to protect the dignity of every person and to draw a moral line that our government will not cross.
WHAT'S HAPPENING →
Over the past year, the federal administration has intensified a campaign of mass immigration enforcement across California — separating families, destabilizing communities, and detaining people without due process.
Private corporations are profiting from this. A new detention facility in Kern County — the largest in the state — was flagged by the California Attorney General for dangerous conditions and inadequate medical care.
An investigation in the Inland Empire found physical abuse, lack of running water, and inhumane conditions inside another private facility. These aren't distant headlines. Families in our communities are being torn apart. Pregnant patients are skipping medical visits out of fear. Children are missing school. Workplaces are being disrupted. An entire generation is being traumatized. And right now, the companies behind all of this can still receive California tax breaks, grants, loans, and public subsidies — funded by your tax dollars.

HOW THE NO TAXPAYER DOLLARS FOR FAMILY SEPARATION HELPS →
The No Taxpayer Dollars for Family Separation Act — draws a clear line: if you profit from private detention or contract with agencies engaged in immigration enforcement, you do not get a dime of California taxpayer money. No tax credits. No grants. No loans. No subsidies.
The bill was introduced by Assemblymember Liz Ortega and co-sponsored by PICO California, California Immigrant Policy Center, and Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond.AB 2465 also establishes the Immigrant Resilience Fund — redirecting resources toward immigrant services and programs that strengthen families rather than separate them.Supporting AB 2465 is how we ensure California lives up to its values. Our tax dollars should work for us — not against us. When we refuse to fund family separation, we defend our ability to care for one another.
The No Taxpayer Dollars for Family Separation Act is about protecting our communities from the separation of families and detention of our immigrant neighbors. Together, we can demand a California that invests in people - not harm. Add your name today!
